Students and teachers of Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College in the Ogba area of Lagos State narrowly escaped death after the four‑storey building housing the school collapsed on Monday, just minutes after they were evacuated.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incident happened around midday at 11 Adudatu Street, behind County Hospital in the Aguda axis of Ogba, when the structure suddenly gave way less than three minutes after students and staff had hurriedly exited the premises.
Witnesses said alarm was raised earlier when wooden planks and parts of the building began falling and signs of distress appeared, prompting school authorities to move everyone out of the building just in time.
Residents described the escape as a narrow miss, with some saying the structure did not show clear signs of imminent collapse until just moments before.
Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service secured the area after the collapse, restricting access and assessing the scene. As of the latest reports, no casualties have been recorded.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on what caused the collapse, and investigations are expected to follow.
