“No Bad Vibes”— Kunle Remi Says AMVCA Comment Was A Joke

Nigerian actor Kunle Remi has clarified that his recent remark comparing the award process at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) with that of Oscars was meant as a joke.

Gatekeepers News reports that the comment had earlier sparked conversation on social media after the Nollywood star reacted to a video showing Hollywood actor Michael B. Jordan watching his Oscar trophy being engraved shortly after his win.

Sharing the clip on his Instagram Story, Remi praised the Oscars’ process, noting that winners get their names engraved on the award immediately and can take it home the same night.

He jokingly compared it with what he suggested happens at the AMVCA, writing: “So they engrave your name after you win! Right there. Take it home! If na AMVCA, all of you will share one for the night then come back and collect it at the next award.”

The remark quickly circulated online, with some interpreting it as criticism of the African award ceremony’s presentation style.

However in a subsequent post on Instagram, Remi later clarified that his statement was made in a light-hearted manner and should not be taken as a serious attack on the organisers of the AMVCA.

“That was a joke, a very honest joke,” the actor said. He praised AMWCA saying that it is the only award that can be compared to the Oscars, and carified that he has no issue either with its organisers.

The actor has previously been part of conversations surrounding the award ceremony, especially after his widely praised role as Saro in the film Anikulapo was omitted from the Best Actor nominations at the 2023 edition of the awards.
