Nigerian Army has raised alarm that terrorists may have deployed multiple suicide bombers into Maiduguri following the recent deadly explosions in the city.
Gatekeepers News reports that the army said intelligence suggests that more attackers could still be within the metropolis, indicating a coordinated plan to carry out multiple bombings in crowded locations.
A statement by Sani Uba, spokesperson of Operation HADIN KAI, confirmed that the explosions were carried out by suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers who used improvised explosive devices at different points across the city.
The army explained that the attacks were deliberately targeted at busy public areas to cause mass casualties and widespread panic. It added that preliminary findings show the terrorists likely infiltrated the city in groups to execute simultaneous or near-simultaneous attacks.
The warning comes after multiple blasts hit key locations in Maiduguri, including a market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate, and the Post Office area, leaving at least 23 people dead and 108 others injured.
Security has since been tightened across the Borno State capital, with military and police intensifying surveillance and patrols to prevent further incidents. Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements.
The attacks are believed to be part of a renewed wave of insurgent violence in the northeast, with suspicion falling on extremist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, which have long operated in the region.
