The Central Bank of Nigeria has advised banking customers to protect their financial information by avoiding the disclosure of personal banking details such as PINs and passwords.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the warning was issued in a message shared on the bank’s official X account as part of activities marking Global Money Week 2026, amid growing cases of fraud and scams targeting unsuspecting bank customers.

The apex bank stressed that sensitive financial information should never be shared with anyone, including individuals claiming to represent banks or other financial institutions.

“Protect your money by protecting your information. As we mark Global Money Week 2026, remember: your PINs, passwords, and banking details should never be shared with anyone, not even someone claiming to be from your bank. Stay alert. Stay safe,” the bank stated.

The advisory comes as fraudsters increasingly impersonate bank officials through phone calls, text messages and emails in attempts to deceive customers into revealing confidential information.

Global Money Week is an annual global campaign aimed at promoting financial literacy, responsible money management and consumer protection.

The initiative is observed worldwide, including in Nigeria, with this year’s activities focusing on safe banking practices and the protection of personal financial data.
