Driver’s Lawyer Alleges Delay Tactics As Court Adjourns Anthony Joshua Crash Case

A magistrate court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the crash that injured Anthony Joshua, to April 16, 2026.

Gatekeepers Newreports that at Tuesday’s hearing, R.D. Kadiri, counsel representing the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), told the court that his team had received fresh information that needed to be incorporated into the case.

Kadiri subsequently requested more time to include the new details.

However, Abiodun Olalekan, counsel to the defendant, criticised the move, alleging “delay tactics” by the prosecution.

Olufunmilayo Somefun, the presiding magistrate, granted the request and adjourned the matter to April 16.

Multiple adjournments

The case has been adjourned several times at the instance of the prosecution.

At the previous sitting on February 25, Kadiri had sought additional time to gather evidence and secure witnesses after the case file was forwarded to the Ogun State DPP by the police.

Earlier, on January 20, counsel to the police, Richard Nigiwe, also requested an adjournment to allow the duplication of the case file and its submission to the state attorney-general through the DPP for legal advice.

Background

The incident occurred on December 29, 2025, when a Lexus sport utility vehicle conveying Joshua and two associates crashed into a stationary truck near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State.

The group was reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu when the accident happened.

Joshua survived with minor injuries, but his associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — died.

Ghami, a longtime friend of the boxer, served as his strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was his personal trainer.

Joshua was later discharged from Lagoon Hospital on December 31, 2025, after receiving treatment.
