Police Nab Delta Community Leader – 4 Others Over Festival Assault Allegations

Delta State Police Command has arrested a community head and four other suspects following allegations of sexual assault during a festival in Ozoro, Isoko North LGA.

Gatekeepers News reports that the suspect identified as Omorede Sunday—said to be the chief organiser of the event—was arrested alongside four others over the incident which sparked outrage online.

The arrests followed the circulation of disturbing videos on social media showing young women being attacked, with their clothes torn and bodies violated by groups of men during the festival.

Witness accounts suggested that women were expected to remain indoors from midday during the celebration, and those seen outside were targeted by some youths.

Confirming the development, police spokesperson Bright Edafe said the suspects had been taken into custody and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the orders of the Commissioner of Police.

“The community head and chief organiser of the event and four other suspects have been arrested,” Edafe stated, adding that authorities are committed to ensuring justice for victims.

The incident has triggered widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians calling for stricter action against those responsible and questioning cultural practices linked to the festival.

Meanwhile, Delta State Government has also condemned the development, stressing that no tradition should be used as a cover for criminal acts.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities continue efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals involved.
