A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the cyberbullying charges filed against Omoyele Sowore, bringing an end to the prolonged legal battle.

Gatekeepers News reports that the case, instituted by former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, accused Sowore of making alleged offensive and inciting statements via his social media platform. The charges were brought under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

However, in its ruling, the court struck out the case on the grounds of lack of diligent prosecution, noting that the police had failed to actively pursue the matter since Sowore’s arraignment in January 2025.

Justice Musa Liman held that the delay in prosecuting the case violated provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, stressing that such prolonged inaction could not be justified.

Following the dismissal, the court ordered that Sowore’s passport, previously seized as part of his bail conditions, be returned to him, effectively restoring his full freedom of movement.

The ruling marks a significant legal victory for the activist, who had consistently argued that the charges were politically motivated and an infringement on his right to free expression.
