Nasiru Gawuna has resigned his position as chairman of the board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) as he prepares to contest the Kano governorship election in 2027.

Gatekeepers News reports that the resignation letter dated March 27 and addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Gawuna said his decision was in compliance with the directive of Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring political appointees with electoral ambitions to step down before March 31.

“I am deeply grateful to His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu… for the immense trust he placed in me,” he said, adding that it had been an honour to serve in his various capacities.

His media aide, Abubakar Musa, said the resignation would allow Gawuna to focus on his ambition to contest the Kano governorship election in 2027.

Gawuna, who was appointed FMBN board chairman in January 2025, previously served as deputy governor of Kano State under Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and was the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2023 elections.

He lost the election to Abba Kabir Yusuf, the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
