Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to sanction officers captured in a viral video allegedly harassing two young men in Lagos.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incident occurred in the Abulado area, where the officers were said to be carrying out a stop-and-search operation. In the footage, the policemen were seen attempting to search the victims’ bags while reportedly intimidating them.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, drew public criticism, with one of the victims heard questioning the officers’ conduct during the encounter.
Reacting to the development, the police complaint response unit stated that the officers involved have been identified and will face disciplinary measures. The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed the divisional police officer in Satellite Town to present the officers in Abuja on April 8 for further action.
The police also appealed to the public for continued support, assuring that efforts are ongoing to curb misconduct within the force and ensure accountability.
The incident comes amid growing scrutiny of police conduct, especially following a recent court ruling affirming that Nigerians have the right to record officers during stop-and-search operations in public spaces without harassment.
