US Mission Urges Nigerians To Verify Visa Information On Official Platforms

The United States Mission in Nigeria has advised visa applicants to rely strictly on official government sources for accurate and up-to-date information on travel requirements and application procedures.

Gatekeepers Newreports that in a post shared on X on Monday, the mission urged applicants to confirm visa rules, categories, and requirements through its official website, U.S. Department of State platform, travel.state.gov, noting that policies are subject to frequent updates.

“Make sure you are getting official information about U.S. visa policies. Please always check official sites for travel guidance. Visit http://travel.state.gov to learn more,” the post reads.

According to the mission, the website provides comprehensive guidance for both immigrant and non-immigrant visa applicants, including application steps, required documentation, interview procedures, processing timelines, and country-specific eligibility criteria.

The mission cautioned that relying on unofficial sources could result in misinformation, delays, or costly errors during the application process. It added that visa policies may change due to administrative updates, security concerns, or diplomatic considerations, making it essential for applicants to regularly verify information.

Applicants were also encouraged to confirm requirements with their nearest US embassy or consulate before submitting applications or making travel plans.

The advisory, the mission said, is aimed at improving compliance, reducing application errors, and ensuring applicants follow the correct procedures.

The notice comes amid recent developments involving the U.S. Embassy Abuja. The U.S. Department of State had earlier directed non-emergency government personnel and their families to leave Abuja over security concerns.

On April 9, the embassy announced the closure of visa appointments and asked affected applicants to check their emails for updates on rescheduled dates.
