National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a strong warning to broadcast presenters, stating that those who present personal opinions as facts or intimidate guests during programmes will face sanctions.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement released on Friday, the commission said it has recorded a noticeable increase in violations of the sixth edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly across news, current affairs, and political programmes.
“The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has identified a sustained increase in breaches of the 6th Edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code across News, Current Affairs, and Political Programmes,” the statement reads.
“Broadcast platforms are increasingly being deployed in ways that depart from their core obligation to inform the public with accuracy, balance, and professionalism.”
NBC expressed concern that some presenters now blur the line between opinion and fact, while also denying guests the opportunity to fairly express opposing viewpoints. It noted that such practices undermine ethical broadcasting standards and weaken public trust in the media.
The commission stressed that neutrality and balance are key requirements under the broadcasting code, adding that presenters must ensure all sides of issues, especially those of public interest, are adequately represented during discussions.
“Henceforth, any anchor or presenter found to have expressed personal opinion as fact, bullied or intimidated a guest, denied fair hearing to opposing views, or otherwise compromised neutrality, shall be deemed to have committed a Class B breach,” NBC said.
The regulatory body also raised alarm over the growing trend of political actors using broadcast platforms to spread divisive, inflammatory, or unverified claims.
It emphasised that media organisations remain fully responsible for all content aired on their platforms, including statements made by guests during live broadcasts.
According to NBC, this editorial responsibility cannot be transferred or avoided, regardless of the nature of the programme. The commission warned that violations involving hate speech, incitement, and lack of balance will attract strict penalties in line with the code.
It further urged broadcasters to uphold professionalism, fairness, and accuracy at all times, especially as the country approaches a sensitive electoral period.
NBC cautioned that the airwaves must not be used to spread misinformation or heighten tensions among the public.
