Troops of Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, have repelled an attempted cross-border attack by suspected ISWAP and Boko Haram fighters in the Kirawa axis of Borno State, killing at least 12 terrorists during the operation.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to military sources, the insurgents launched the attack in the early hours of Friday, targeting troops stationed around the border community. However, soldiers reportedly responded with heavy firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat after a fierce gun battle.
The Nigerian Army said several weapons and ammunition were recovered from the fleeing insurgents following the failed assault. Troops also reportedly pursued the terrorists into surrounding areas to prevent regrouping.
Kirawa, located near Nigeria’s border with Cameroon, has remained one of the flashpoints of insurgent activities in the north-east due to repeated attacks by fighters linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram.
The latest operation comes amid renewed military offensives against insurgent groups in Borno and other parts of the north-east. In recent months, troops under Operation Hadin Kai have intensified ground and air operations targeting terrorist enclaves, logistics routes and suspected commanders.
Security agencies have continued to warn residents in vulnerable communities to remain vigilant as efforts to contain terrorist attacks across the region continue.
