Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspects for allegedly possessing 250 live cartridges, in a development authorities described as a major breakthrough in efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and violent crime across the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that the suspects, identified as Ganiyu Sodiq, 35, and Salaudeen Sheriff, 23, both residents of Komu, were arrested on June 10, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation at Budo Pako in Oke-Oyan, Itesiwaju Local Government Area.
The Command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Thursday, noting that operatives recovered 250 live cartridges from the suspects.
According to him, preliminary investigations showed that the suspects failed to provide any lawful explanation for possessing the ammunition.
Ayanlade said early findings indicated that the suspects might be linked to the illegal trafficking and supply of ammunition to criminal groups operating within and outside Oyo State.
“The Oyo State Police Command has recorded another significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition and enhance public safety across the state,” he said.
“Acting on credible intelligence and sustained surveillance operations, operatives of the Command arrested two suspects, namely Ganiyu Sodiq (35) and Salaudeen Sheriff (23), both residents of Komu, in connection with the unlawful possession of ammunition.
“The suspects were apprehended at Budo Pako, Oke-Oyan, where a total of 250 live cartridges were recovered from their possession.”
The police spokesperson said further intelligence-driven investigations were underway to uncover the wider network behind the alleged ammunition trafficking, identify possible accomplices and determine the source and intended destination of the recovered cartridges.
He added that the suspects remain in police custody and would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbemiga, reaffirmed the Command’s determination to combat the spread of illegal arms and ammunition, describing them as key drivers of violent crimes.
Olugbemiga assured residents that the police would continue to deploy all lawful measures to identify, arrest and prosecute individuals involved in criminal activities.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support security agencies with credible and timely information, stressing that community cooperation remains vital in the fight against crime and criminality in the state.
