A courtroom exchange captured in a viral video has generated widespread reactions on social media after an unidentified suspect attributed his alleged criminal conduct to the country’s economic situation while pleading for mercy before a judge.
Gatekeepers News reports that the suspect, who spoke in Igbo while standing in the dock, begged the court for leniency and promised not to repeat the offence.
He claimed he had a legitimate trade but blamed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for circumstances that led to his actions. His remarks reportedly drew laughter from some people present in the courtroom.
The viral clip did not reveal the suspect’s identity, the offence he was accused of, or the court where the proceedings took place.
Following the video’s circulation online, social media users expressed mixed opinions. While some argued that economic hardship and poor governance can contribute to rising crime, others maintained that individuals must still be held accountable for their actions regardless of prevailing conditions.
The incident has continued to fuel debate over the impact of Nigeria’s economic challenges on everyday life and criminal activity.
