FG Raises WAEC – NECO Registration Fee To N50k From 2027

Federal Government has approved a new registration fee of N50,000 for candidates sitting West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), representing an 82 per cent increase from the current fee of N27,500. The new rate will take effect from the 2027 examination cycle.

Gatekeepers News reports that the approval followed a request by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for a review of examination charges. In a circular dated June 18, 2026, Adeniji Ibrahim, Director of Senior Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, said the decision was based on resolutions reached during a meeting between the Minister of Education and examination bodies on March 31, 2026.

According to the ministry, both WAEC and NECO have now been directed to adopt a uniform examination fee for candidates writing the Senior School Certificate Examination. The ministry said the N50,000 charge will apply from the 2027 NECO SSCE (Internal) and subsequent examinations.

The Ministry of Education also instructed that the decision be communicated to all relevant stakeholders to enable adequate preparations before implementation. The ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, later confirmed that the Federal Government had approved the upward review of the examination fees.

The increase comes amid ongoing education reforms by the Federal Government, including measures aimed at strengthening the credibility of public examinations and curbing examination malpractice across the country.
