Former Liverpool and Newcastle United star Kevin Keegan has died at the age of 75 after battling cancer, his family announced on Monday.
Gatekeepers News reports that Keegan, widely regarded as one of England’s greatest footballers, had been diagnosed with stage four cancer and underwent treatment in January. His death marks the end of a remarkable career that saw him excel both as a player and manager.
In a statement, his family confirmed that he died surrounded by his loved ones.
“It is with immense sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75,” the statement said.
“Kevin, a double Ballon d’Or winner, was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather.
“The former England player and manager had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments.”
Keegan was one of only four English players to win the Ballon d’Or, claiming the prestigious individual honour in consecutive years during an illustrious playing career.
Nicknamed “Mighty Mouse” for his energetic style, the striker began his professional career with Scunthorpe United before establishing himself as one of Liverpool’s greatest players.
During six memorable seasons at Anfield, Keegan won three English top-flight league titles, the FA Cup in 1974, and the European Cup in 1977. He left Liverpool that same year to join German side Hamburg.
His success continued in Germany, where he guided Hamburg to the Bundesliga title in 1979 and helped the club reach the European Cup final the following year. His outstanding performances earned him the European Player of the Year award in both 1978 and 1979.
On the international stage, Keegan scored 21 goals in 63 appearances for England and later managed the national team. He also enjoyed a memorable managerial career, notably revitalising Newcastle United and restoring the club’s status as one of England’s top teams.
Paying tribute, Liverpool described Keegan as a player whose legacy would forever remain part of the club’s history.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Kevin Keegan and mourn his loss,” the club said.
Keegan is remembered as one of English football’s most influential figures, whose achievements on and off the pitch left a lasting impact on the game.
