National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down three alcohol manufacturing companies in Ota, Ogun State, for violating the Federal Government’s ban on the production of alcoholic beverages in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles below 200 millilitres.
Gatekeepers News reprots that the enforcement action is part of the agency’s nationwide crackdown on manufacturers flouting the prohibition.
According to NAFDAC, the operation was led by Kunle Ojo, Assistant Director of the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate. Inspectors uncovered several violations during raids on the affected factories, including the continued production of banned sachet alcoholic drinks despite previous regulatory directives.
The agency said one of the factories had initially been placed on hold after officials discovered active production of sachet alcohol and large quantities of PET bottles. However, during a follow-up inspection, enforcement officers found that the prohibited products had been secretly removed from the premises, an act NAFDAC described as a serious breach of regulatory enforcement.
A second company was caught actively producing sachet alcoholic beverages during the operation, prompting officials to immediately seal the premises. At a third factory, NAFDAC discovered that 22 production machines it had previously sealed in January had been illegally reopened and put back into operation. Millions of PET bottles and sachet packaging materials were also recovered and confiscated for destruction.
NAFDAC reiterated its zero-tolerance stance against regulatory violations, stressing that the ongoing enforcement exercise is aimed at ensuring full compliance with the nationwide ban and protecting public health.
Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye said recent inspections in Ogun, Lagos and other states revealed that some manufacturers had continued producing the banned products, with packaging materials bearing production dates as recent as July 2026.
She also alleged that some operators attempted to evade detection by relocating equipment to unregistered facilities and removing company signboards to conceal their activities.
