The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has removed the officer in charge of the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, along with two other principal officers, following a viral TikTok livestream by an inmate on death row.
Gatekeepers News reports that the service confirmed that the inmate was found in unlawful possession of a prohibited mobile phone, which has since been recovered during a search operation and secured as evidence.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, described the incident as a “serious breach of custodial security.”
According to the NCoS, the inmate has been transferred to another custodial facility with enhanced security pending the conclusion of investigations, while security lapses that contributed to the breach have already been identified.
The service said Nwakuche ordered the immediate removal of the officer in charge and the two other principal officers to ensure an independent investigation.
“This administrative action is without prejudice to the final outcome of the investigation and is intended to ensure a transparent, impartial and unhindered investigative process,” the statement said.
While the service said the inmate’s involvement had been established, it noted that investigations were continuing to determine whether any correctional officers, inmates or external collaborators were negligent or complicit in the security breach.
Nwakuche warned that anyone found to have facilitated, aided or condoned the incident would face severe disciplinary measures in line with existing regulations.
The Controller General added that preliminary findings had reinforced the need to strengthen ongoing security reforms across custodial centres nationwide.
“The Service appeals against speculation while investigations continue and assures Nigerians that it remains resolute in its constitutional mandate of ensuring the safe, secure and humane custody of all persons legally committed into its care,” he said.
