Veteran journalist and founder of Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, has died at the age of 56 after suddenly taking ill at his office in Lagos.
Gatekeepers News reports that Oladipo reportedly died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. According to reports, he was in his usual state of health earlier in the day before he suddenly became ill at his office. He reportedly drove himself to a hospital for medical attention but died hours later.
His death was confirmed by Danlami Nmodu, President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), through the guild’s WhatsApp platform. Oladipo had previously served as president of the organisation.
Nkanu Egbe, General Secretary of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS), also announced his death, describing it as a devastating loss to Nigerian journalism. Oladipo was the organisation’s president and had been involved in journalism for nearly three decades.
Before establishing Eagle Online, Oladipo worked with several major Nigerian newspapers, including Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass, The Sun and PUNCH Newspapers, where he served as Politics Editor.
The news has sparked an outpouring of tributes from members of Nigeria’s media community and public figures. President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and GOCOP have mourned the veteran journalist, with Tinubu describing his death as a painful loss to the media industry and the country.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, with the IMPCMS saying further details would be communicated later.
