Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Augustine Eguavoen as interim head coach of the Super Falcons ahead of the team’s 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign.
Gatekeepers News reports that Eguavoen, a former head coach of the Super Eagles, will lead the Falcons in their two-legged second-round Olympic qualifying tie against Comoros in October.
He will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, head coach of Nasarawa Amazons, while former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf and former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa are also expected to form part of the technical team.
Nigeria will begin its Olympic qualifying campaign against Comoros, with both legs scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo. The first leg is scheduled for October 9, while the return leg will be played on October 13.
The Super Falcons received a bye into the second round as one of Africa’s top-ranked teams. Comoros, meanwhile, advanced after securing a 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan.
The Falcons will have to progress through four rounds of two-legged knockout ties to secure one of Africa’s two available places at the women’s football tournament of the 2028 Olympic Games. Should Nigeria defeat Comoros, the team will advance to the third round in early 2027, where it will face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco.
The appointment marks Eguavoen’s first time managing a women’s national team. He takes over several weeks after Justine Madugu was sacked as Super Falcons head coach alongside his technical crew.
Madugu’s dismissal followed the Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, marking the first time Nigeria will miss the tournament since its inception in 1991.
Eguavoen will now be tasked with guiding the Falcons through the Olympic qualifiers and helping the team secure a place at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
