Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has described his side’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion as a “big lesson” after the Premier League champions suffered their first loss of the season.
Gatekeepers News reports that Arsenal went into Saturday’s game at the Amex Stadium having won all seven of their matches in all competitions, but Brighton produced a dominant performance to bring their perfect run to an end.
Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute before Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s advantage shortly before half-time. Chema Andrés added a third early in the second half as Arsenal suffered their heaviest defeat in more than three years.
Arteta said he was disappointed with Arsenal’s performance and acknowledged that Brighton were the better side.
“Extremely disappointed. First of all, I think we have to congratulate Brighton for the victory; I think they deserve it. I think they were the better team.”
The Spaniard also criticised Arsenal’s performance in key areas, saying: “From our side, there were certain basics that you need to accomplish in football, especially in the Premier League, that we were very far from.”
Arteta said the result should serve as a reminder of the demands of competing at the highest level.
“It’s a big lesson for us all to understand what it takes to win at this level.”
He nevertheless defended his players’ work over the opening weeks of the campaign, noting that the defeat did not erase their achievements since returning from the World Cup.
“That’s not going to take away what the team has done, and the boys have done in the last six or seven weeks since coming back from the World Cup,” Arteta said. “With 18 players coming back, what we’ve done and the way we’ve competed and the amount of games we’ve won has been remarkable.”
The defeat was Arsenal’s first in the Premier League this season and their heaviest in any competition since April 2023. It also marked the third consecutive season in which the reigning Premier League champions have lost at Brighton.
Arsenal will now have the international break to regroup before returning to competitive action.
