Credit extended to Nigeria’s private sector increased to N84.55 trillion in August 2026, according to the latest money and credit statistics from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Gatekeepers News reports that the figure represents an increase of N1.13 trillion, or 1.35 percent, from N83.43 trillion recorded in July.
The August increase marked the third consecutive monthly rise in private-sector credit. Credit had increased from N81.04 trillion in May to N83.26 trillion in June and N83.43 trillion in July.
Compared with August 2025, when private-sector credit stood at N75.88 trillion, the latest figure represents an increase of N8.67 trillion, or 11.42 percent.
However, the August figure remained below the N94.61 trillion recorded in February 2026, which was the highest level during the period covered by the CBN data.
Meanwhile, credit to the government declined by N1.22 trillion, or 3.60 percent, from N33.92 trillion in July to N32.70 trillion in August.
Government credit has fallen consistently since May, when it stood at N40.38 trillion. It dropped to N40.03 trillion in June before declining further in July and August.
CBN data also showed that total net domestic credit stood at N117.25 trillion in August, compared with N117.35 trillion in July and N123.29 trillion in June.
Net domestic assets rose to N101.99 trillion in August from N101.07 trillion in July.
Money supply, measured by M3, also increased from N138.78 trillion in July to N139.38 trillion in August, while M2 money supply rose from N138.77 trillion to N139.37 trillion during the same period.
