Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has disclosed that electricity distribution companies (DisCos) metered 301,726 customers across Nigeria in July and August 2026.

Gatekeepers News reports that the commission disclosed this in its metering status factsheet for the two months, stating that the companies installed meters for 159,980 customers in July and 141,746 in August.

According to the report, the number of metered customers increased from about 7.9 million in July to 8.04 million in August, while active electricity customers rose from 12.67 million to 12.74 million.

NERC said the national metering rate increased from 62.37 per cent in July to 63.10 per cent in August, indicating that more customers had been connected to metering infrastructure during the period.

A breakdown of the figures showed that Benin DisCo recorded the highest number of new meter installations in July, with 35,693 customers, followed by Ibadan DisCo with 34,791 and Abuja DisCo with 19,400.

In August, Ibadan DisCo led with 28,381 newly metered customers, followed by Port Harcourt DisCo with 26,556 and Benin DisCo with 21,783.

Eko DisCo recorded the highest metering rate in July at 89.30 per cent, followed by Ikeja DisCo at 87.9 per cent and Abuja DisCo at 82.04 per cent.

Eko DisCo maintained its lead in August with a metering rate of 89.64 per cent, followed by Ikeja DisCo at 87.74 per cent and Abuja DisCo at 82.62 per cent.

Jos DisCo recorded the lowest metering rate in both months, at 37.60 per cent. Yola DisCo followed with 37.76 per cent in July and 39.15 per cent in August, while Kaduna DisCo recorded 41.30 per cent and 42.32 per cent, respectively.

The figures indicate that although the national metering rate continued to improve, millions of electricity customers remained without meters, leaving the country with a substantial metering gap.
