Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has led members of Rivers State House of Assembly and chairmen of the state’s 23 local government areas to a fresh meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara as efforts to sustain reconciliation between the two political camps continue.
Gatekeepers News reports that the meeting was held on Sunday at Fubara’s private residence in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, less than two weeks after political leaders aligned with both men met at the same venue.
The delegation included Martin Amaewhule, speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, and Kingsley Chinda, All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the state, alongside the local government chairmen and other members of the Rainbow Coalition.
The discussions were held behind closed doors, and details of the meeting were not immediately made public.
The latest engagement comes amid efforts to consolidate the rapprochement between Wike and Fubara following a prolonged political crisis that divided the state’s leadership and strained relations between the governor and lawmakers loyal to the FCT minister.
The disagreement began shortly after Fubara assumed office in 2023 and escalated in October of that year, when a fire damaged part of the state assembly complex. The crisis subsequently triggered impeachment proceedings against the governor by lawmakers aligned with Wike.
In March 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and members of the state assembly. The intervention followed months of political tension and disputes over control of the state’s political and legislative institutions.
The emergency rule was lifted in September 2025, allowing Fubara, his deputy and the lawmakers to return to office.
Despite their return, disagreements over political control and the relationship between the governor and the assembly remained a major issue in the state.
On October 6, Wike, Fubara, Chinda and their supporters held a meeting that lasted about four hours as part of the reconciliation process. That engagement brought together representatives of the opposing camps in an effort to ease tensions and establish a working relationship.
Wike had also announced an end to the political feud, saying Fubara had agreed to return to the political family that supported his emergence as governor.
The latest meeting brings together the governor, lawmakers and all 23 local government chairmen in another attempt to sustain the reconciliation process.
The engagement also comes as political activities gather momentum ahead of 2027 general elections, with APC preparing for the next governorship contest in Rivers State.
However, the details of any agreement reached at Sunday’s meeting remain unclear, including whether the discussions addressed outstanding disagreements between the Governor and the assembly or how both camps intend to manage their political interests ahead of the elections.
