Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned four transmission substations in Kano State, adding 544 megawatts (MW) of wheeling capacity to strengthen electricity supply across the state and the national grid.
Gatekeepers News reports that the projects were delivered in partnership with the Kano State Government and are located in Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi.
The Federal Ministry of Power said the new facilities would improve bulk electricity supply to industrial, commercial and residential areas, ease pressure on overloaded substations and provide additional capacity to meet previously unmet demand.
At Walalambe, a new substation equipped with two 40-megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformers provides 80MVA of capacity, with six outgoing feeders serving the Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and neighbouring communities.
Kumbotso has received additional transmission infrastructure, including a 300MVA transformer at the 330-kilovolt level and a 100MVA transformer. Dakata and Dan-Agundi have each received an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132-kilovolt level.
The ministry said Lee Group, a major industrial enterprise, had been reconnected to the national grid after operating off-grid for more than 30 years.
It added that the fire-damaged Dan-Agundi substation had regained substantial capacity to supply electricity to Kano’s ancient town, the Emir’s Palace and surrounding communities.
The ministry said the investments would strengthen electricity infrastructure for manufacturers, small businesses and households, supporting industrial activities, employment and improved living conditions.
It described the projects as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and efforts to strengthen the power sector as a foundation for national development.
However, the additional transmission capacity does not automatically guarantee improved electricity supply to every household, as actual delivery also depends on available power generation and the capacity of distribution networks.
The commissioning forms part of ongoing efforts by the federal government and TCN to expand and rehabilitate transmission infrastructure across the country.
