Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, ruling him out of Galatasaray’s league fixture this weekend and expected to sideline him for Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Tanzania.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Turkish champions confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, November 6, following medical examinations on the Nigerian forward.
According to the club, Osimhen sustained a strain in his left knee during their UEFA Champions League encounter against VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday, November 3, which ended in a 2-0 victory for Galatasaray.
An MRI scan subsequently detected a loose body in the affected knee, prompting the club to schedule an arthroscopic operation for Saturday, November 7, at Maslak Acıbadem Hospital in Istanbul.
The procedure will be performed by the club’s doctor, Yener İnce.
Galatasaray said the 27-year-old had consequently been withdrawn from the squad for Saturday’s Turkish Super Lig encounter against Amed Sportif Faaliyetler.
The injury is also expected to rule Osimhen out of Nigeria’s double-header against Tanzania in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, scheduled for November 13 and 17.
The Super Eagles will host the Taifa Stars in Uyo before travelling to Tanzania for the return fixture.
However, Galatasaray has not announced a recovery timeline, while the Nigeria Football Federation is yet to formally confirm his absence from the fixtures.
The latest setback comes after Osimhen also missed Nigeria’s September qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau due to a groin injury.
The striker had been expected to return for the November fixtures, but the new knee problem has raised further concerns over his availability for the national team.
His absence would be a setback for coach Eric Chelle as Nigeria prepares for the crucial qualifying encounters.
