Kano police command has declined to comply with the state government’s directive to evict Aminu Bayero, the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, citing a pending court case on the eviction order.
Gatekeepers News reports that in an interview with Punch on Friday, Kano Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, stated that the government’s eviction directive is premature since the case is scheduled for hearing on June 24, 2024.
Gumel emphasised that the police will not evict the deposed Emir, as the government’s own court case on the eviction order takes precedence.
He noted that the judge’s ruling on the emirate law passed by the state house of assembly remains valid.
This development follows the Kano governor’s announcement on May 23, reinstating Muhammadu Sanusi as Emir of Kano and deposing Bayero.
The state government has acknowledged the court verdict, affirming the emirate law’s validity.
However, the government has ordered the demolition of a section of Bayero’s palace and directed the police to take over the Emir’s palace in Nassarawa LGA.
