Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Enugu Zonal Directorate, arraigned Blessing Amaka David-Agwa in an Enugu federal high court on Tuesday for defrauding more than 45 women of up to N28,278,600.

Gatekeepers News reports that the EFCC, in its investigation into David-Agwa’s case, discovered that David-Agwa forged certificates from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

The EFCC said David-Agwa then used those forged certificates to pose as a medical fertility nurse who was specially trained to help women get pregnant easily.

This investigation also revealed that David-Agwa defrauded more than 45 women of their money.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) apprehended David-Agwa and handed her over to the EFCC for prosecution.

The EFCC is prosecuting David-Agwa on 45-count charges that border on fraudulent impersonation, forgery and obtaining up to N28,278,600 by false pretence.

“That you, Blessing Amaka David-Agwa sometime in 2024 in Enugu, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, with intent to defraud, did obtain the total sum of One Million, Six Hundred Thousand Naira (N1,600,000.00) only from one Okenwa Joy Chiamaka, under the pretence of being a medical fertility nurse (specially trained to assist women get pregnant with ease) which pretext you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act,” count 41 of the charges read.

David-Agwa pleaded not guilty after the prosecutor read the charges.

Blessing Obasi, the EFCC’s counsel, requested a trial date and for the defendant to be remanded at the Enugu Correctional Facility Centre.

G. C. Madubuegwu, David-Agwa’s counsel, prayed the court grant the defendant bail on liberal terms.

Obasi also disagreed, arguing that the charges against the defendant were too weighty for her to be granted bail. She also appealed to the mental health of the victims.

After hearing both lawyers, Justice Mohammed Garba Umar adjourned the hearing for bail application until November 12.

The court ordered David-Agwa to be remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Facility pending the next hearing.
