Amavubi of Rwanda stunned the Super Eagles of Nigeria 2-1 in the final AFCON qualifier match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Monday. Despite Nigeria’s earlier qualification for the tournament, the team’s lackluster performance led to their first loss in the campaign.
Gatekeepers News reports that interim coach Austin Eguavoen made seven changes to the starting lineup, but the multitude of changes failed to yield desired results. Nigeria struggled in the first half, with Kelechi Iheanacho’s shot being the only notable scoring opportunity.
In the second half, Samuel Chukwueze’s brilliant solo goal put Nigeria ahead, but Rwanda quickly equalized and scored another goal within three minutes, securing their first-ever win against the Super Eagles.
