Nigeria’s national grid has collapsed, resulting in blackout across the country.

Gatekeepers News reports that the data from the Nigerian system operator’s portal indicated that the grid recorded zero megawatts (MW) as of 2 PM on Wednesday, December 11.

The Abuja Electric Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the system failure on their social media platform, noting that the incident occurred at 1:33 PM.

“We wish to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 1:32pm today causing power outage across our franchise areas,” AEDC said.

“While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, be assured that we are coordinating closely with relevant stakeholders to restore power fully as soon as the grid is stabilized.”

Similarly, Friday Adakole, Head of Corporate Communications, Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC), on Facebook, said the current outage affected all feeders.

“The current outage being experienced within our franchise States is a result of loss of power supply from the national grid,” Adakole said.

At the time of this report, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not yet confirmed the incident.

This year has seen multiple instances of grid failures, with the first occurrence on February 4. Subsequent collapses were reported on March 28, April 15, July 6, August 5, and again on October 14, 15, and 19. A further incident was recorded on November 6, followed by another collapse just 72 hours later.
