World Press Freedom Day: Akuko Foundation Demands Journalist Protection – Transparency

In commemoration of International Press Freedom Day on May 1st, Aluko Foundation has called for stronger protections for journalists and increased transparency from public institutions.

Gatekeepers News reports that the foundation, a media advocacy and training organization, expressed deep concern over the growing repression and hostility faced by journalists globally, including Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its Programme Manager, Victoria Ukpong, Akuko Foundation condemned the harassment, arbitrary detention, and censorship of journalists, noting that such practices endanger lives and erode democratic values.

The foundation said, “We believe journalism is not a crime—it is a cornerstone of accountability. A free and independent press is essential for holding power to account, exposing corruption, informing the public, and upholding human rights. When journalists are attacked, society suffers.”

It urged governments and law enforcement agencies to fulfill their international legal obligations by protecting journalists, ensuring due process, and prosecuting those responsible for attacks against media professionals.

The foundation also encouraged public institutions—including government bodies, businesses, and civil society organisations to adopt transparency and welcome journalistic scrutiny as part of democratic development.

Highlighting its commitment to media freedom, Akuko Foundation reaffirmed its dedication to promoting ethical journalism and open access to information through advocacy, policy engagement, and capacity-building programs for journalists.

It added, “ As we work toward securing foundational support, we will continue to engage with media platforms to

strengthen visibility and amplify the voice of independent journalism”
