Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Saturday, attended the swearing-in of Gabon’s President, Brice Oligui Nguema in Libreville.
Gatekeepers News reports that the ceremony marked Nguema’s formal assumption of office following his victory in the country’s presidential election held on April 12.
Nguema, who won against seven other candidates, had served as Gabon’s transitional leader for 20 months after leading the military takeover that ousted longtime president Ali Bongo in August 2023.
The event featured military parades, cultural showcases, and speeches by dignitaries.
In his address, President Nguema thanked the citizens of Gabon for their trust and promised to focus on national development, youth empowerment, and tackling pressing issues such as insecurity and water shortages.
Vice-President Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was accompanied by top Nigerian officials including Usman Bello Kumo, chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, and Aliyu Modibbo, special adviser to the president.
Other African leaders present included presidents from Rwanda, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Senegal, and several Central and West African nations.
The vice president returned to Abuja after the inauguration.
