President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Super Falcons following their 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final on Saturday in Rabat, securing a record 10th continental title.
Gatekeepers News reports that the president praised the Super Falcons for their spectacular performance, in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, his special adviser on information and strategy.
Tinubu noted that their spirited comeback reflects the true essence of Nigerian determination.
He said, “The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit.”
“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations!
Nigeria celebrates you.”
Jennifer Echegini sealed the win with a late 88th-minute goal after the team overturned a 2-0 halftime deficit.
Earlier strikes from Esther Okoronkwo and Florence Ijamilusi had drawn the Falcons level, cancelling out Morocco’s first-half goals from Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy.
With this win, Nigeria remains the only African nation to claim the WAFCON title in double digits.
