The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has set up a 44-member zoning committee in preparation for its national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16.
Gatekeepers News reports that the convention will elect new members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
The committee is tasked with allocating NWC positions to the country’s geopolitical zones, after which the National Executive Committee (NEC) will review and approve the recommendations.
Based on the party’s tradition, if the chairmanship position is zoned to the north, the presidential ticket will go to the south, and vice versa.
In 2021, the PDP zoned its chairmanship to the north, but in 2022, it left the presidential ticket open—a decision that sparked an internal crisis still lingering today.
During the inauguration at the PDP national headquarters in Abuja, acting national chairman Umar Damagum described the committee as critical to shaping the party’s leadership and electoral prospects over the next four years.
Damagum stressed the need for fairness, equity, and strategic thinking in the zoning process, while also highlighting the importance of unity, loyalty, and positioning the party for victory.
He noted that the PDP had withstood leadership changes and defections, reaffirming its resilience as a central force in Nigeria’s democratic space.
The chairman urged the committee to ensure that both principal officers and their deputies are individuals of integrity, creativity, and capacity who can inspire confidence and mobilise effectively.
