Emmanuel Nwachukwu, candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has emerged winner of Saturday’s by-election in Anambra South senatorial district.
Gatekeepers News reports that the results were announced on Sunday by Frank Ojiako, the returning officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Nwachukwu secured 90,408 votes, defeating his closest rival, Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 19,847 votes. Donald Amangbo of African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 2,889 votes.
The Anambra South senatorial seat became vacant following the death of Ifeanyi Ubah in London in June 2024 at the age of 52.
Ubah, who was re-elected to the 10th senate on the platform of Young Progressives Party (YPP) in 2023, later defected to All Progressives Congress (APC) in October 2023.
APGA also won the Onitsha North Constituency 1 seat in the state house of assembly.
INEC’s returning officer, Ibiam Ekpe, declared Ifeoma Azikiwe winner with 7,774 votes, defeating Justina Azuka of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who scored 1,909 votes.
The constituency seat was left vacant following the death of Justice Azuka, the former lawmaker representing the area.
He was abducted in December 2024, and his decomposing body was discovered in February 2025.
