National Orientation Agency (NOA) has condemned the assault of a female corps member by vigilantes in Anambra State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incident occurred on August 19, when a video circulated on social media showing security operatives entering a corps members’ lodge and accusing the residents of internet fraud.
In the footage, one operative was seen physically attacking a corps member, identified as Jennifer Elobor, while others observed. The altercation resulted in her clothing being torn, exposing her body as she called out for assistance.
This incident has sparked significant outrage on social media, with a substantial number of Nigerians calling for justice for the victim.
In response, Ken Emeakayi, the special adviser on community security to Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra, expressed that the event was both “unfortunate and unacceptable.”
The state police command has since confirmed the arrest of several suspects involved.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Lanre Issa-Onilu, the director-general of NOA, referred to the attack as “regrettable and unacceptable,” emphasising that it undermines the collective values of Nigeria.
Issa-Onilu also noted that the incident represents a violation of the dignity and rights of citizens and constitutes a betrayal of public trust.
“As clearly enshrined in the National Values Charter, both leaders and citizens have reciprocal responsibilities: leaders must guarantee accountability and uphold the public trust, while citizens must demonstrate a duty of care and mutual respect in their conduct toward one another,” the statement reads.
He commended the Anambra government for intervening and called for the prosecution of those involved in the assault.
“This is the least measure of justice due to the corps member whose rights and dignity were so brazenly violated,” he added.
The NOA DG further warned that incidents of abuse by those in authority tarnish Nigeria’s image and must not be repeated.
