Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, in collaboration with the Lagos Island Local Council Development Area (LCDA), has commenced a major urban regeneration initiative on Lagos Island with the foundation laying of an ultra-modern shopping mall.
Gatekeepers News reports that the project is sited at the former Pelewura iron rod market in Adeniji Adele, which was recently cleared for redevelopment.
According to the state government, the new facility, to be known as the Lagos Island Iron Mall, is designed to transform the area into a modern commercial hub equipped with supermarkets, cinemas, and other standard amenities.
The project is part of broader efforts to modernize Lagos Island and integrate it into the state’s urban renewal agenda.
Officials explained that the regeneration of the old iron market aligns with the newly concluded Lagos Island model plan, which outlines a comprehensive redevelopment strategy for the area.
The ministry has pledged to ensure that the mall is built to specification and has scheduled a stakeholders’ meeting to engage the community in the process.
The Lagos Island LCDA leadership emphasised that the mall is expected to revive the area’s commercial significance and restore its vibrancy.
Construction is projected to take one year, with the location chosen for its strategic position near the Third Mainland Bridge and the palace of Oba Akiolu.
The groundbreaking event was attended by government officials, community leaders, and representatives of key organisations, signaling the start of what is expected to be a landmark urban transformation project on Lagos Island.
