Nigeria will be without Victor Osimhen when the Super Eagles face South Africa in the World Cup qualifying match, following an injury he sustained.
Gatekeepers News reports that updates from the team’s camp on Sunday confirmed that Osimhen will not make the trip to Bloemfontein for Tuesday’s encounter.
The striker picked up the knock during Nigeria’s narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday.
He appeared in discomfort after a tackle and was attended to by medical staff before attempting to continue. However, he could not carry on and was replaced by Cyril Dessers in the 35th minute.
Team doctors later diagnosed him with a shin injury. According to Promise Efoghe, the team’s media officer, the Napoli star remains unfit to travel.
Efoghe said, “Team doctor confirmed Victor Osimhen’s injury is a bruise on his Shin. He woke up this morning with discomfort and will not be traveling with the squad to South Africa for Tuesday’s game.”
The setback comes just as Nigeria finally secured its first victory in five outings in Group A of the qualifiers. The Super Eagles currently sit third with 10 points from seven matches, while South Africa top the group with 16 points.
