Tinubu Orders FEC Committee To Tackle Soaring Food Prices

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee on food security to act swiftly and implement measures aimed at reducing food prices nationwide.

Gatekeepers Newreports that Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, disclosed this on Thursday during a capacity-building workshop for Senate correspondents in Abuja.

According to him, the President’s directive prioritises the safe passage of farm produce across transport routes to cut logistics costs, a key factor driving food inflation.

He added that the plan is tied to Tinubu’s broader vision of achieving food sovereignty.
“It is not just about availability, but also affordability, accessibility, and nutrition on a sustainable basis,” Abdullahi said.

The minister also revealed that government will soon roll out a farmer soil health scheme to boost productivity, alongside a revamped cooperative reform initiative to mobilise resources and empower rural farmers.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has urged President Tinubu to immediately implement the Supreme Court judgment granting full autonomy to local councils.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, and signed by its President-General, Aliyu Kankara, the union warned against further delay.

The communiqué condemned the alleged seizure of local council allocations in Osun State, describing it as unjust and detrimental to grassroots development.

It also raised concern over the non-implementation of the new national minimum wage in some states, calling the situation “callous and unfair,” especially given the country’s current economic realities.

The NEC further appealed to the Federal Government to intervene in the political crisis in Osun State and restore withheld council funds in the interest of “peace, justice, and sustainable development.”
