Lagos State Police Command has arrested Samsideen Oladiti, a senior official of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), over allegations of murder and assault.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement on Friday by Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Babasayi Oluseyi, the command confirmed that Oladiti, popularly called Shamelon, is being held for discreet investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba.
According to the police, the 55-year-old allegedly assaulted a dispatch rider on September 17, striking him with a helmet and his fists, leaving the victim in critical condition and on oxygen support in hospital.
The police further revealed that a separate complaint linked Oladiti to an earlier attack on August 28, during which he allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike another man.
Despite medical intervention, the victim died on September 17, and his body has been deposited for autopsy.
News of the death triggered a protest at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, where angry sympathisers set two motorcycles ablaze.
Lagos Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, led officers to the scene to restore calm, assuring residents that justice would be served.
He also appealed to the public to remain law-abiding and avoid taking matters into their own hands.
