The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down two Chinese-owned supermarkets in Abuja’s Jabi District and eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market for selling unregistered and improperly labeled products.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the enforcement exercise, led by Musa Embugushiki under the directive of NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, saw the confiscation of goods worth more than ₦170 million.

The affected supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street, were sealed after consumer complaints and surveillance confirmed they were selling unregistered food items labeled only in Chinese. NAFDAC regulations require all regulated products in Nigeria to carry English-language labels for transparency and consumer safety.

Although the operator of the Ebitu Ukiwe Street store denied wrongdoing, officials found the supermarket fully operational and selling unregistered products during the raid.

In Wuse Market, eight cosmetics shops were sealed for marketing banned, expired, and unregistered products, including aphrodisiacs and aesthetic medicines. Investigators also uncovered individuals impersonating dermatologists and pharmacists, who were selling harmful products for skin whitening, body enhancement, and other purposes.

Seized items included Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Boobs Enlargement supplements, Curvy Weight Gain products, and Skin Whitening Vitamin Gummies.

Prof. Adeyeye warned that such substances pose serious health risks, including skin cancer, kidney damage, irritability, and memory loss.

“NAFDAC remains resolute in protecting Nigerians from harmful substances,” she said, urging consumers to buy only NAFDAC-registered products. She also advised foreign business owners to comply with Nigerian laws and called on the public to report suspicious outlets to the agency.
