The United Kingdom has unveiled a new proposal to allow workers in 82 mid-skilled professions to obtain temporary work visas.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to a report released by Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) on Thursday, the initiative is part of a broader strategy by the UK government to address labour shortages while keeping migration levels in check and promoting economic stability.
Commissioned by the Home Office, the report highlights key occupations deemed vital to supporting the nation’s infrastructure and productivity.
Brian Bell, chair of the MAC, explained that the committee has proposed visa durations ranging from three to five years.
He also noted that holders should be allowed to switch to higher-skilled roles under the skilled worker route while in the country, to encourage career advancement.
Bell further stated that English language proficiency for applicants should not fall below level B1, adding that the list of occupations is provisional and will be reviewed before the committee’s final report is published in July 2026.
Among the occupations featured on the initial list are writers, designers, electricians, IT technicians, financial officers, construction workers, laboratory and engineering technicians, and various creative professionals. Others include business analysts, marketing executives, fashion designers, welders, plumbers, and metal workers.
The new migration pathway, once finalised, is expected to serve as a temporary solution to fill critical skill gaps across multiple industries until domestic training efforts catch up with demand.
