Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Federal Government’s Renegotiation Team, led by former Head of Service, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, as its two-week warning strike enters the seventh day.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement to members dated October 19, 2025, ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, revealed that notable progress has been made on five of the union’s seven-point demands.

According to the bulletin, titled Strike Bulletin No. 2 and obtained by The Guardian, the areas showing improvement include the release of third-party deductions, payment of promotion arrears, and the mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).

Other concerns being addressed are the confiscation of the University of Abuja’s land and the reported victimisation of ASUU members at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Lagos State University (LASU), and Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

Piwuna also disclosed that several respected Nigerians have stepped in to mediate between the union and the government to end the standoff.

He said, “Engagements are continuing on all elements of the draft renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement guided by the principles of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).”

“We commend the resilience and courage of our members in various branches, but we should remain united and steadfast in the few days ahead. The Branch Chairperson remains the only reliable source of information at all times; so attend your branch congress meetings promptly.”
