Wahab Shittu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to open diplomatic discussions with the United States following President Donald Trump’s recent threat of military action against Nigeria.
Gatekeepers News reports that Trump had on Saturday declared that the U.S. would suspend all aid to Nigeria if the government continues to allow the killing of Christians,” adding that he had instructed the Department of War to “prepare for possible action.
Addressing journalists in Lagos, Shittu said the situation demands an immediate and coordinated diplomatic response, led personally by Tinubu and involving key African leaders. He warned that ignoring the threat could escalate tensions between
the two nations.
Shittu said, “In the face of the latest U.S. threats of a possible action against Nigeria, I urge the Nigerian president and the ruling elite to immediately engage the U.S. president diplomatically, led personally by our president in collaboration with AU Heads of Government, to prevent the outbreak of a U.S. war against Nigeria.”
The SAN further urged Tinubu to suspend other official duties to prioritize the crisis, emphasizing that peace initiatives should be launched swiftly.
He added, “We need to move swiftly. Our president should put on hold other official engagements to address this existential threat against Nigeria and her people. We need to engage, plead, and initiate peace overtures to the U.S. authorities.”
Shittu also appealed for unity among Nigerians, calling on citizens to support the government’s diplomatic efforts.
He said, “Nigerians must unite to support our leadership and governments at all levels as we deploy diplomatic measures to confront this challenge. May Almighty God assist Nigeria in overcoming this critical moment. Our authorities should preach only the language of peace, peace, and peace.”
