The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Yoruba actor Oyewole Olowomojuore, popularly known as Baba Gebu.
Gatekeepers News reports that the actor, widely admired for his fatherly roles in Yoruba movies, reportedly passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, after a brief illness.
News of his death was confirmed by actor and filmmaker Kunle Afod, who announced the tragic development on Instagram on Wednesday.
In his tribute, Afod described the late Baba Gebu as a great legend whose contribution to the Yoruba film industry would never be forgotten.
Afod wrote, “It saddens my heart as I announce the passing away of our great legend, a great actor who passed away this evening after a brief illness… BABA GEBU, may your soul rest in peace.”
Baba Gebu was regarded as one of the foundational figures in Yoruba movie industry, having built a reputation for his calm, fatherly portrayals and mentorship of younger actors.
In 2024, Baba Gebu revealed in an emotional interview that the death of his wife had left him devastated, but returning to acting became a source of healing and comfort.
Fans and industry peers have flooded social media with tributes, celebrating his decades-long impact on Nollywood.
Funeral arrangements for the late actor are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
