Federal government is set to roll out the Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) in January 2026.
Gatekeepers News reports that Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced this in Abuja on Friday during the unveiling of the ECOWAS biometric ID card.
The new document is designed to offer a more secure and verifiable means for citizens to return home, though Nandap had not previously provided a launch date.
Explaining the reform, Tunji-Ojo said Nigerians abroad will be able to generate the travel document directly from their mobile devices without needing to visit an embassy.
He encouraged citizens to continue trusting the government’s efforts to address national concerns and support ongoing security initiatives.
STEP, which is valid for only one entry, forms part of the NIS’s broader push to improve border management, strengthen identity systems, and align with global migration standards.
