Seriake Dickson, Senator representing Bayelsa West and former Governor of Bayelsa state, has expressed profound grief over the death of Lawrence Ewhrudjakpor, describing the late deputy Governor as the “best among my political mentees”
Gatekeepers News reports that in a Facebook post on Friday, Dickson recounted that he was preparing to attend the Senate screening of ambassadorial nominees when he received news of Ewhrudjakpor’s medical emergency. He rushed home to monitor the situation until his worst fears were confirmed.
He wrote, “December 11 will remain one of my saddest days. I was already gearing up to be part of the screening of the
ambassadorial nominees as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs when I received a call about the medical emergency involving His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpor, the Deputy
Governor of Bayelsa State.”
“I spoke with his aides and the doctors, then left abruptly and came home to monitor the situation until my worst fears were confirmed.”
“I have been saddened and heartbroken since his death was confirmed. We have lost a most selfless, dedicated, honest, and loyal public servant.”
“Personally, I have lost a dependable, principled mentee committed to service to God, humanity, and the least among us. Dr. Ewhrudjakpor was the best among my political mentees — a rare blend of competence, intellect, loyalty, and selflessness.”
Dickson praised Ewhrudjakpor for his dedication and integrity, highlighting his progression from a union activist to serving as his personal aide, Senior Legislative Aide, Commissioner for Works for eight years, and later as Deputy Governor.
He noted that Ewhrudjakpor played key roles in landmark infrastructural projects and upheld principled service even during challenging times.
Dickson added, “He remained dutiful and loyal, often putting principle above position”, noting that Ewhrudjakpor chose loyalty and gratitude over retaining office when faced with difficult decisions.
He also reflected on Ewhrudjakpor’s personal and academic growth, including completing a Doctorate in Law while serving in demanding roles. He described him as emotionally stable, intellectually formidable, and irreplaceable.
The senator said funeral arrangements would be announced by the family in consultation with the state government.
He called on the public to pray for Ewhrudjakpor’s peaceful repose and strength for the bereaved family.
