Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and Federal Capital Territory has commended Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri for granting a pardon to Sunday Jackson, a farmer who had been sentenced to death.
Gatekeepers News reports that Governor Fintiri’s decision, made as part of Christmas and New Year clemency measures, saw Jackson freed among three inmates granted full pardon, while the remaining jail terms of five others were remitted.
Northern CAN described the governor’s action as courageous and compassionate, saying it brought relief and restored public confidence in fairness and the rule of law.
The group noted that Jackson’s case had drawn widespread national attention because he was convicted of killing an attacker in self‑defence after a confrontation on his farm.
In a statement, the association said the pardon affirmed that justice guided by mercy can still prevail and sent a strong message that Nigeria values life, fairness, and the protection of the innocent. It added that the decision also helped to calm public anxiety over the case.
Northern CAN also urged leaders to uphold justice and harmony across the nation and called on citizens to remain law‑abiding and committed to peaceful coexistence.
In international reaction, a U.S. Congressman welcomed Jackson’s release and praised the engagement by Nigeria’s government, urging continued efforts to protect him and strengthen security.
