A road accident along the Nteje–Onitsha expressway in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, has claimed the life of a woman.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incident, which involved a Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC SUV without a registration number, was confirmed on Saturday by Anambra State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Bridget Asekhauno, while speaking with journalists in Awka.
Asekhauno explained that the crash was caused by excessive speed, a tyre burst and loss of control by the driver. She said eyewitnesses reported that the driver was speeding when he suddenly encountered a motorcyclist riding against traffic.
She said, “According to eyewitness reports, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was speeding when he suddenly sighted a motorcyclist riding against traffic.”
“While trying to avoid the motorcyclist, he lost control of the vehicle, which somersaulted and crashed.”
“A total of five people, including two male adults, two female adults, and a girl-child, were involved in the incident.”
She disclosed that one female adult died on the spot, while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The injured victims were reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital by passersby before FRSC officials arrived at the scene.
The sector commander added that the damaged vehicle was later evacuated and taken to the Ogbunike Police Station for further investigation.
Asekhauno expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. She also used the incident to caution motorists to obey traffic rules, avoid speeding, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition, noting that road crashes in the state are often linked to human error and traffic violations.
