The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has imposed a total ban on the burning of used tyres during crossover night activities marking the New Year celebrations across the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Commissioner directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to strictly enforce the ban and ensure the arrest and prosecution of anyone found engaging in the prohibited act.
According to the police, the measure is aimed at protecting critical government and private infrastructure from damage and defacement, preventing environmental pollution, and ensuring the free flow of traffic and public safety during the festive period.
CP Mohammed also urged vulcanisers operating across the state to properly dispose of used tyres or remove them from their business premises at the close of work each day to prevent unauthorised access.
He further called on parents and guardians to caution their wards against burning tyres or engaging in any related unlawful activities, stressing that the command remains committed to guaranteeing a peaceful, safe and hitch-free New Year celebration for residents.
Four Killed as Truck Rams Into Eggon Carnival Procession
Meanwhile, tragedy struck during the annual Eggon Carnival in Nasarawa-Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Monday, as a road accident claimed the lives of four people and left several others injured.
The accident involved three trucks, one of which reportedly rammed into the carnival procession. Victims who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Nasarawa-Eggon General Hospital, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Yahaya Sabo-Adikwu, attributed the crash to reckless driving and confirmed that the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital.
A witness at the scene said the trucks lost control while approaching the procession, alleging that reckless driving by the drivers contributed to the incident. The witness also called for a thorough investigation and mandatory drug testing for drivers of heavy-duty vehicles.
Following the incident, organisers announced the cancellation of the 2025 Eggon Carnival, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extending condolences to the families of the victims.
